The Alberto Iria School was founded in 1990 and has since then suffered some structural changes. It’s was a basic Education School that taught students from the fifth to the ninth grade. Some years ago it changed into an “Agrupamento”, i.e., a consortium of schools which includes a pre-educational school, or Kindergarten, a 1st cycle basic school- with students from the 1st to the 4th grade, and the 2nd and 3rd cycle basic school, which teaches students from the 5th to the 9th grade. The last one is called “E.B. 2/ Dr. Alberto Iria” and the all consortium is called “Agrupamento Vertical de Escolas Dr. Alberto Iria”. The all consortium is, since 2009, part of a priority educational territory created by the Ministry of Education, also known as TEIP (Território Educativo de Intervenção Prioritária). These are educational territories that due to their social and economical characteristics face educational problems which urge for specific interventions. In the case of our consortium the main problems were poor school results and early school abandonment. Some of the solutions for these problems have been: a) The diversity of educational offers. The school has four types of courses: - The Regular Curricula course (National curricula is taught); - The Education and Formation courses (which are semi-professional courses that prepare young people, aged 15 or older, for a job). This year the school is offering Commercial clerk, Gardening and Educational Assistant (help kindergarten or school teachers) - Alternative Curricula Courses (students, aged 14 or younger, with learning problems are integrated in alternative curricula classes). - ORE (Other Educational Responses – children with disabilities or special educational needs are taught practical every day activities) b) The integration of specialized technicians such as a social worker and a psychologist who can create the “bridge” between the school and the student’s families. c) Special class arrangements: smaller classes; two teachers in the Math class; division of class in two groups; extra lessons in subjects like Math; Portuguese and English. E.B. 2/3 Dr. Alberto Iria was involved in the Comenius project Etalage. At present time the school is involved in the Petall project.
